Following a 'strip map'
When Ivan, Beth and the Beetle did their first overland trip in 1961, they relied on a 'strip map'. The 'strip map' was basically a list of directions with no actual map or geographical features on it. Each page covered a section or strip of roads.
Here's a copy of one below, starting in Teheran and listing the towns by miles. It noted the road type (e.g. metalled and mountainous) and which towns had petrol stations.
